Neurotoxins
Neurotoxin injections are the number one cosmetic procedure in the country. More than five million procedures are done yearly with Botulinum toxin type A to lift the eyebrows, diminish wrinkles in the forehead and frown lines between the eyes. When you squint or frown, the muscles between your brows contract, causing the skin to furrow and fold. These lines that occur due to facial mimics are referred to as dynamic lines. Over time, as your skin ages and loses some of its elasticity, these repeated contractions can cause persistent frown lines.
What is Newtox?
Hello, Jeuveau!
(Jeuveau comes from the French word “nouveau” which means new, and you see where we are going with this one.)
Thank you science! Now there is help for moderate to severe glabellar lines or “frown lines” that just won’t go away!
Jeuveau is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults for a period of time.
So what is a glabellar line? Those pesky little wrinkles between your eyebrows that won’t go away…aka frown lines.
Jeuveau -a new FDA- approved injectable treatment that temporarily improves the look of frown lines. Made through a modern manufacturing process, Jeuveau is the first product of its kind dedicated exclusively to aesthetics.
What it does?
Jeuveau prevents your nerves from telling your facial muscles to flex. The result? In clinical trials, Jeuveau was shown to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines. In 2 long-term safety studies, patients received an average of 3 treatments over the course of 1 year.
What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is a prescription medication used in facial aesthetics to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe facial lines in adults. Botox is the only medication FDA approved to temporarily make moderate to severe forehead lines, crow’s feet lines and frown lines soften and look better. BOTOX® contains botulinum toxin type A, a protein purified from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
BOTOX® in Aesthetics: How Does it Work?
Botulinum toxin type A – the active ingredient in BOTOX® prevents muscle fibers from contracting. They temporarily block the chemical signal from the nerve that moves the muscle. When used in the right amount by a trained professional, the muscle will relax, but not appear frozen, keeping it from pulling too hard on skin that has lost elasticity from environmental exposure. By reducing these contractions, BOTOX can temporarily reduce the lines on your forehead, between your eyes and around the eyes. BOTOX is also used to relax platysmal bands in the neck, giving the neck a smoother appearance. BOTOX is used to treat TMJ or grinding of the teeth, providing relief to those who suffer from facial pain related to these conditions.
Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Right for You?
For individuals 18 to 65 seeking to diminish the “crinkle” lines that form when smiling, laughing, frowning or lifting the brow, BOTOX® Cosmetic is a popular and effective solution. While BOTOX® Cosmetic can produce desirable results with the brow-lines that form while the muscles are contracting, deeper lines that appear even at rest may require a separate rejuvenation procedure.
The BOTOX® Cosmetic Procedure
BOTOX® Cosmetic uses tiny amounts of a botulinum toxin type A—a widely studied medical tool approved in 75 nations—administered through tiny injections in the muscles that directly impact brow lines. The botulinum toxin blocks the release of the chemical that causes the muscles to contract. Since it only acts locally, the procedure does not impact your ability to smile or show facial expression. BOTOX®Cosmetic is minimally invasive, requires no anesthesia and can be performed in your doctor’s office in a few minutes.
Risks
FDA-approved BOTOX® Cosmetic meets a high standard of safety but, as with any procedure, risks are present. The most serious risks, while rare, involve heart problems or allergic reactions which require immediate attention by a physician. More common side effects include temporary drooping of the eyelids, nausea, localized pain, swelling, tenderness, redness, bleeding or bruising. Patients with certain neuromuscular issues like ALS, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may have an increased risk of serious side effects.
Recovery Time
The procedure takes about 10 minutes, and under normal circumstances, the patient should experience no downtime. Effects usually take five–10 days to occur. Lines may continue to diminish for up to a week after your treatment.
Follow-up
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a temporary means of softening wrinkles in the brow area. Effects last up to four months and follow-up procedures may be necessary at that time.
What is DYSPORT®?
DYSPORT® is a prescription medication used in facial aesthetics to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe facial lines in adults. DYSPORT is FDA approved to temporarily make moderate to severe forehead lines soften and look better. DYSPORT® contains botulinum toxin type A, a protein purified from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

Is Dysport Right For You?
Dysport is a protein extracted from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It has been used to treat a wide variety of neuromuscular disorders, for which it is licensed in over 60 countries. In New Zealand, Dysport now has registration approval under the Medicines Act for the treatment of frown lines and for excessive sweating under the armpits.
Tiny amounts of Dysport are injected directly into the facial muscles underlying the frown lines. It usually takes three to five small, almost painless injections between the eyebrows for an effective treatment. No local anaesthetic is usually required but if you are concered your doctor can numb the skin over the area before injecting. You can expect treatment to take around 10-20 minutes.
By temporarily immobilizing the muscles you use to frown, Dysport can smooth out lines, restoring a more youthful, less stressed expression. The lasting effect of treatment with Dysport can differ between individuals and in some cases additional treatments may be necessary. Speak with your doctor about the results you can expect with Dysport.
